Paul Mattila

On September 4, 2009, Paul Mattila, Shelby County Trustee, died, at the age of 65, as a result of a long and valiant battle with lung cancer.

Because he valued people and community relationships, he worked tirelessly in Shelby County and throughout the state to deliver exceptional service.

Services will be held at Memorial Park on Wednesday, September 9th. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm. The Service will begin at 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

In 1997, Mr. Mattila joined the Trustee's Office and began his public service career by talking with taxpayers one-on-one and over the phone. Over the next twelve years, he embraced every aspect of the tax collection process and held the positions of supervisor, legislative liaison, and ultimately, Trustee. Because he valued people and community, he worked tirelessly in Shelby County and throughout the state to deliver exceptional service. After being elected in August 2008, Trustee Mattila continued his focus to provide significant tax benefits to almost 10,000 senior citizens and disabled veterans. Even in a struggling economy, community outreach and collection activity remained solid. As a result, tax collections were stable quarter after quarter for a year-ending record of $ 693 million. At every turn, Trustee Mattila took great pride in being part of the Trustee team. As the leader of the state's largest county treasury representing an office of 100 employees, he encouraged and witnessed excellence while cherishing the hard work and dedication of others. To his last day, he was grateful for the opportunity to be of service.
